Please have a look at these links in order to make comments at our meeting.

Be prepared to explain something about Sacrament at your level - if you have a specific sacrament be prepared to share its signs and symbols.  Also be prepared to share something you have done or could do as a learning activity at this level - something which will also enliven the spirituality of your students.
Mrs Brookes & Miss Jackson - holy things
Mrs Burke - Baptism
Miss Huls - Reconciliation
Mrs Dooley - Eucharist
Mr Cartlidge - Sacrament of Anointing
Miss Tangney - Confirmation
Mrs Frances-Rees - Holy Orders
Mr Moore - Marriage

Read the theology for Sacrament at the beginning of your strand book.  Be prepared to discuss this at the meeting.

Read through the key concepts at each level

Outcomes of Church Strand Taonga

Outcomes of Church Strand Taonga

We decided on four key concepts we would like our children to develop and deepen as they move
From: Newportchristian.wordpress.com
through our school:

1. The Church is the people united with God

We want the children to know they ARE the church.
Becoming part of the church - ceremonies, initiations, Baptism.
That we are Disciples- following the way of Jesus
Belonging and participating
The Church shows us how we need to act in our lives - we are the Church
Church as the bride of Christ
We are a community of disciples , our parish is a sign of God in the world - Jesus founded the Church and it is a sign which brings about God’s presence and love in the world.

2. We all have a role in the Church
To take some responsibility like presenting the gospel or saying prayers or reading or children’s ministries such as altar serving etc...
What are we called to do because we are part of the church (vocations)
Roles in the church

3. Formal roles within the Church
The work of the priest in the church.
Teaching role of bishops
The role of the pope

4. The Mission of the Church

To understand that the church is the continuation of Jesus' mission to live God's Kingdom on Earth.

These four concepts will be the context of the Church strand teaching throughout the school.  We continue to teach the learning outcomes for the Religious Education curriculum at each year level in the context of these four concepts.

We agreed:

For year 1-3 the class teacher will decide the content of the assessment.  This will be entered on the assessment gathering file and the children will be marked 1= exposed, 2=achieving, 3=mastered.

For years 4-8 we will take the same test but leave it open for the children's answers.  We would expect achievement to be shown mainly in the context of their year strand.  For children to show mastery it should be clear that their understanding of their year level work is linked to some of the main concepts we want them to understand (above).

The test for the strand can be seen at this link (public): https://docs.google.com/a/stjoseph.school.nz/document/d/1Dtt_5NyYDMOwBnw6m3J6ThuvlLTR56PV9d6oGyA_ykA/edit

Church Strand Staff meeting

Church Staff Meeting - Term 3, 2014

Meeting date: Tuesday 22 July, 3.15.
Purpose:
1. To reconnect with the theology and curriculum progression behind the Church strand,
2. To review some relational thinking possibilities, and
3. To agree on some key ideas we want children to understand and deepen as they move through the school.
(We don't have the God strand assessment information yet.  We will share this at the next meeting.)

The highlighted parts are the parts we will put our time into at the meeting.  Everything else should be read and digested beforehand. There will not be time for this in the meeting.  At the meeting there will be time for questions and clarifications of any of the reading or data.  Then we will move on to construct our next step.

Any files containing student information are private to us.  Everything else is public.

1. Create an "end point" for our school leaver of what we would like them to know about the Church
Step 1: read the theology about Church at the beginning of your strand book.
Come to the meeting prepared to discuss any tricky or challenging parts, or share anything you just love about it.

Step 2: At the meeting we will have a look at a Prezi to help us think more about the theology

Step 3: Have a look at the key learning objectives for each year level: https://docs.google.com/a/stjoseph.school.nz/file/d/0B5kVPCsXjRbYSTM4NTVvN0xYSUE/edit

Step 4: Have a look at an example SOLO relational thinking analysis map for the Church strand: https://docs.google.com/a/stjoseph.school.nz/file/d/0B5kVPCsXjRbYVklmZlVSODA0a00/edit

Step 5: Bring a succinct example to the meeting of something you have done previously with the Church strand that has helped children's learning.

Step 5:  At the meeting we will use all this information to come to agreements on some basic understandings about Church, which can grow with the children.  Even though the basic understandings underpin the teaching and learning, we will still teach the content at our level and use that to access the basic understandings.

Step 6: We will have some discussion about the type of things we could use to assess this understanding.

Step 7: I will make a test for us based on what we agree and share it in the Google RE folder under Church.

Step 8:  We will agree a date to enter data so that we can come prepared to the next meeting.

FINALLY: Reflect on this process - what do we keep, what do we change?

Outcomes of God Strand Meeting

Outcomes of God Strand Staff Meeting

We decided on four key concepts we would like our children to develop and deepen as they move
From: Mojano.com
through our school:

1. God loves us.
2. We know about God through the Bible, through His Creation and through our personal relationship through prayer.
3. What God is like - Father, Creator, everywhere, all powerful etc.
4. God is the Creator

These four concepts will be the context of the God strand teaching throughout the school.  We continue to teach the learning outcomes for the Religious Education curriculum at each year level in the context of these four concepts.

The test for the strand with teacher's notes can be seen at this link (public):  https://docs.google.com/a/stjoseph.school.nz/file/d/0B5kVPCsXjRbYR3BNaExud1FzdEU/edit and the test is at:  https://docs.google.com/a/stjoseph.school.nz/file/d/0B5kVPCsXjRbYYXBnQmxSTWhiRnc/edit

From: Mojano.com

Meeting date: Wednesday 18 June, 3.15, in Manuka
Purpose: 1. To review and interpret previous assessments.
2. To reconnect with the theology and curriculum progression behind the God strand, and
3. To agree on some key ideas we want children to understand and deepen as they move through the school.

The highlighted parts are the parts we will put our time into at the meeting.  Everything else should be read and digested beforehand. 1. What did our assessment on the Holy Spirit tell us?  How does this compare with the Jesus assessment and what does that tell us?
Step 1: Have a look on the assessment data we have gathered overall.  On this file there are tabs at the bottom: sheet 1 = comparison of Jesus and Holy Spirit strand, sheet 2 = Jesus assessment and sheet 3 = Holy Spirit assessment.

a) Assessment overview 2014: https://docs.google.com/a/stjoseph.school.nz/spreadsheets/d/1Bvvd8tiOr9feP6oxufM_frs96VYf4pxiK8lZg1tp0zU/edit#gid=0

Outcomes of Holy Spirit Staff Meeting

Outcomes of Holy Spirit Staff Meeting

After analysing:

  • our achievement information from the Jesus strand,
  • the theology behind the Holy Spirit teaching,
  • an overall SOLO progression for the Holy Spirit,
  • some examples of activities we found inspired children in our past teaching,
  • our key concepts at each year level for the Holy Spirit,

we decided on four key concepts we would like our children to develop and deepen as they move through our school:

1. How the Holy Spirit is active in people.
2. How the Holy Spirit is represented in the Bible.
3. God is a Trinity - God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and this is a faith mystery.
4. Images of the Holy Spirit.

These four concepts will be the context of the Holy Spirit teaching throughout the school.  Bearing in mind that we need to expose, strengthen and reinforce these concepts as the children grow.  We will continue to teach the learning outcomes for the Religious Education curriculum at each year level in the context of these four concepts.

Holy Spirit Planning Meeting

Holy Spirit Staff Meeting - Term 2, 2014

I recently discovered the term "flipped classroom."  Its something I've been trying to do with my class for a while without knowing it actually had a name.  If you want to find out more about it have a look at:  http://t.co/g1W89hK27F - basically its the idea that students access the things they've traditionally been taught by the teacher through good quality video instruction (they all tend to prefer this because they can go slower/faster/replay according to their need and its there to go back to) and then use the classtime to question and clarify the learning and then for collaboration, creation, evaluation etc.

So if we flip our staff meeting this means that everything except the parts we need to collaborate on could be done in advance and we would come prepared to synergise!  It would cut our meeting times in half, or more.

We will try this for our Wednesday 21st May meeting.  The highlighted parts are the parts we will put our time into at the meeting.  Everything else is prepared beforehand.

AIMS:
1. to develop an idea of what we want our school leaver to understand about the Holy Spirit.  This idea needs to be a core understanding that can grow with the child.  This will help children entering the school later on have a chance to access this understanding according to their stage of development.

2. Develop deep assessment which will benefit ongoing teaching and learning and which has continuity throughout the school.

Any files containing student information are private to us.  Everything else is public.

1. What did our assessment on Jesus tell us?
Step 1: Have a look on the assessment data we have gathered about the Jesus strand:
a) look at your own information in:  https://docs.google.com/a/stjoseph.school.nz/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ApkVPCsXjRbYdHpCX0FFTExHTkJKWEdaR0g2Z3p3V2c&usp=drive_web#gid=6
b) look at the overall information in: https://docs.google.com/a/stjoseph.school.nz/file/d/0B5kVPCsXjRbYWGZzUFVzakdMSFk/edit

To discuss: how useful is this information?  Would it inform your teaching?  Could it help the next teacher?  Could you use it for reporting?
What does this data tell us?  Are there any trends we need to notice?

2. Create an "end point" for our school leaver of what we would like them to know about the Holy Spirit
Step 1: read the theology about the Holy Spirit at the beginning of your strand book.
Come to the meeting prepared to discuss any tricky or challenging parts, or share anything you just love about it.

Step 2: Have a look at the key learning objectives for each year level: https://docs.google.com/a/stjoseph.school.nz/file/d/0B5kVPCsXjRbYdTJDMnZuOUxRQjA/edit

Step 3: Have a look at the SOLO assessment rubric - anything we need to change here? https://docs.google.com/a/stjoseph.school.nz/file/d/0B5kVPCsXjRbYOXVGamM5UDJYWVE/edit

Step 4: Bring a a succinct example to the meeting of something you have done about the Holy Spirit which has helped the students to feel or understand the Holy Spirit better in an affective way (doesn't have to be in the curriculum, or at your present year level).

Step 5:  At the meeting we will use all this information to come to agreements on some basic understandings about the Holy Spirit which can grow with the children.  Even though the basic understandings underpin the teaching and learning, we will still teach the content at our level and use that to access the basic understandings.

Step 6: We will have some discussion about the type of things we could use to assess this understanding, including SOLO and along the lines of what we did for the Jesus strand.

Step 7: I will make a test for us based on what we agree and share it in the Google RE folder under Holy Spirit.

Step 8:  We will agree a date to enter data so that we can come prepared to the next meeting.

FINALLY: Reflect on this process - what do we keep, what do we change?
